The Working Traveler

By Isla Campbell

If your job requires a lot of travel you will know how important it is to prepare yourself well for business trips. Constant traveling for work can take its toll so its paramount that you plan ahead and ensure you take a break now and again to ensure you dont burn out and end up resenting your job. For the working traveler there are plenty of ways you can make the most of your job if you think ahead and take steps to make the most of your travel time

The first thing you should do when planning a business trip is to figure out the essentials you need to take with you. If you are constantly flying from meeting to meeting packing a bag for every single destination is just not feasible, so figure out what essentials you will need for each trip and keep these packed and ready to go just in case you are called away at short notice. If you regularly travel on long haul flights its always a good idea to pack some toiletries such as extra tooth paste, deodorant and face wipes into your hand luggage. Having these items to hand will mean you can head straight from the plane to that all important business meeting without wasting valuable time.

When booking your travel its a good idea to use airlines that will allow you to check in remotely so you dont have to spend hours waiting at the airport check in queue. Its also prudent to start collecting air miles so you can blag a well deserved free plane ride when you find some down time. If you need to do work whilst you are waiting for your plane to take off it could be a good idea to take advantage of some of the private waiting areas that are available at bigger airports. Most airlines have lounges with free wi-fi so if you can afford to fly business class, or pay an annual fee to use the private lounges, this could make your airport stay a much more productive one.

If you spend most of your down time traveling to the next business meeting then you should try to make sure you are spending this time wisely on things you like to do. Its far to easy to get immersed in work when you have a meeting on the horizon but its important to make sure you relax and unwind once in a while. If you are visiting a new country try to plan a few days of sightseeing while youre there so you can enjoy some free time in a new and exciting place.

When you are constantly traveling its important that all your documentation is taken care of. You will need to ensure all your working and visitor visas are taken care of well in advance so you dont end up being denied entry to a country. Its also prudent to get international health insurance so you dont have to worry about where and what you are covered for whilst youre away on business.
Travelling with work can be a great way to see the world but its important to organise your time well so you can make the most of your travels and your working life.
